VOTING in the Australian elections was on Saturday. As I write, it’s Tuesday evening over there and still not all the results are in.
It seems that the counting of voters’ second, third and fourth preference votes, using the Alternative Vote (AV) system, isn’t conducive to an efficient count or early result.
Now, that’s hardly an insurmountable problem; the UK government wasn’t formed until five days after the polls closed in May, and the earth didn’t open up and swallow us. But the added delay and uncertainty that AV would bring – not to mention time taken to conclude the inevitable coalition negotiations about which policies should be scrapped without reference to the people who just voted for them – certainly can’t be put in the “for” column in the electoral reform debate.
