To infinity and beyond - Andy Love MP
I'm not sure if I've quite got the training to be a double-decker bus driver so it's a good job that in this photo I'm only pretending, not actually driving the thing!

Last week the BT 'Infinity' bus rolled into Edmonton Green Shopping Centre. BT doesn't have a huge amount to do with buses but it was a good way to bring the demonstration of the new broadband technology to local people.

Why would anyone be bothered about how internet distribution technology works while they went about their shopping?, I hear you ask. Well, it's actually pretty big news for the residents of Edmonton as our area is one of the very first in the whole country to get super-fast broadband.

Thanks to a £1.5 billion groundwork project carried out by BT, around 17,000 customers in Edmonton will now be able to benefit from the lightning speed of the latest fibre optic broadband. And exchanges in Ponders End and Winchmore Hill are planned to go live in September and December of this year respectively, benefiting a further 21,000 customers. The rest of the UK will follow at a later date.

This matters because it boosts download speeds to 40Mb/s and upload speeds to 10Mb/s. Now, you all know I'm not a technical genius and things like that go totally over my head, but I can understand that a more powerful internet connection means that more people can do more online at the same time, and more quickly. This has an obvious appeal to computer literate families and also to businesses.

To me, the real important issue is developing Labour's 'Digital Inclusion' plan, which means getting as many people access to a computer and to the internet as possible. If this investment in technology paves the way for that to happen then I'm happy for people to talk mega-bites, wi-fi and upstream rates all day long!
