I was there predominantly to unveil four comfortable park benches, which the church has donated to the community to mark the tenth anniversary of the founding of the King's House in Edmonton. The benches are made out of recycled plastic and are completely maintenance free, and they are now situated on the Montagu Recreation Ground for the whole community to benefit from (so fingers crossed for the sunny weather to last so we can make the most of them!).
It's a simple gesture to donate some park benches to a community area, but it's one that people notice and one that will really make a change to the recreation ground.
I was speaking to the Senior Minister of the King's House Family Church, Reverend Tony Peters, and he said that instead of just "doing" church, they wanted to "be" the church, meaning that they really wanted to engage with the local community, and providing benches was just one of the ways they were going about doing that.
It's really great to see local groups making substantial contributions to the welfare and life of the community in Edmonton. It's the small positive things that bring people together and make all the difference. These aren't usually the things that make the news, but long may they continue.
